Blog #2: Camila Martino

  Dear future me, last week in Public Speaking, the class discussed changemakers who have revolutionized the United States ever since the country’s independence. Through these presentations, I learned that individuals from different centuries spread their ideas, leadership, and determination to influence society and leave a lasting impact on the country. I learned about people who have contributed to various areas, including politics, civil rights, art, science, and technology, which demonstrated the different ways meaningful change can occur in society. Learning about each changemaker’s impacts and how they shaped history made me feel very inspired and proud of the changes they have brought to the United States.   During the Changemakers presentation, I really liked seeing how everyone’s presentations came together. The groups covered the time since America was founded, and it was pretty fascinating to see how every era was different, as well as the people who impacted them. Many of the presenters chose super impactful people, as well as highlighting them in different ways. Because of how different everyone’s approach was, I learned so many new things about people who were either recognizable or should be recognized more. This changemakers presentation was an amazing opportunity to learn, admire, and engage with different people all throughout history.  For the first presentation, Group 4 covered the constitutional changemakers, who are responsible for being constitutional authors and activists.   Camila Martino Blog Post Dear future me, in the first week of class, during the Public Speaking lecture, we discussed the process of writing a public speech. I never expected that this experience would make me reflect so deeply on how people communicate. Before starting this class, I thought it would just focus on how to deliver speeches in front of a group of people without being nervous, but it’s actually made me more aware of details such as the importance of listening, adapting to your audience, and building your confidence, which can affect how effectively you deliver your message. Once I became aware of how important they are in day-to-day life, I developed a deeper understanding of how communication works. It's something that can be applied in everyday activities, such as conversations, presentations, interviews, and even the way we express our ideas online in mediums like this one.   As one of the class project managers, I have the unique opportunity to listen to the group presentations in a different way. Even though I’m not involved in the development of a presentation, I’m tasked with both introducing and concluding the presentation, which is a very exclusive task. My responsibility is to maintain a good flow in between each presentation in order to keep the procession smooth. For our chapter presentations, it was my first time practicing such a task. I wasn’t sure of the particular way to go about presenting my assigned group since I didn’t have prior experience, but despite that, I managed to practice a process that I’ll use for the rest of the class this semester.  Group #1’s presentation was the most well-researched presentation in my opinion.
